Rachel: Oh no, I forgot my wallet at the flat!
Monica: If you hadn't rushed out, you wouldn't have forgotten it.
Rachel: I know, I know. If I had been more organized, I would have remembered it.
Chandler: Well, if you had called a taxi, you could have gone back for it before the pub closed.
Rachel: True! Ugh, next time I'll be more careful.
Ross: Indeed. A prepared individual experiences fewer inconveniences. That’s a verifiable truth according to several empirical studies on preparedness… Rachel, are you listening?

Il Terzo Condizionale

Il terzo condizionale in inglese si usa per parlare di situazioni ipotetiche nel passato, di cose che sarebbero potute accadere ma non sono accadute. Esprime un rimpianto o un'occasione persa.Si forma con:

If + Past Perfect (had + past participle), nella frase della condizione (if clause).
would/wouldn't have + past participle, nella frase principale.

La struttura completa è quindi:If + soggetto + had + past participle, soggetto + would/wouldn't have + past participle.

Esempi

If I had studied more, I would have passed the exam. (Se avessi studiato di più, avrei superato l'esame.)
She wouldn't have missed the train if she had woken up earlier. (Non avrebbe perso il treno se si fosse svegliata prima.)

Forma Contratta

Would have si può contrarre in would've. Had si contrae in 'd sia nella if clause che nella frase principale.

If I'd gone to bed earlier, I wouldn't have been so tired.
They'd have won the match if they'd played better.

L'ordine delle due frasi può essere invertito, senza cambiare il significato. In questo caso, la virgola non è necessaria.

I would have passed the exam if I had studied more.
She wouldn't have missed the train if she had woken up earlier.

Uso di 'could have' e 'might have'

Oltre a 'would have', nel terzo condizionale si possono usare anche 'could have' (avrei potuto) e 'might have' (avrei potuto/sarei potuto forse), per esprimere possibilità o probabilità nel passato.

If I had had more time, I could have visited the museum. (Se avessi avuto più tempo, avrei potuto visitare il museo.)
If it hadn't rained, we might have gone to the park. (Se non avesse piovuto, saremmo potuti forse andare al parco.)

Examples

Example: If I had woken up earlier, I would have caught the bus. (Se mi fossi svegliato prima, avrei preso l'autobus.)

Example: If she had studied harder, she would have passed the exam. (Se avesse studiato di più, avrebbe superato l'esame.)

Example: If they had gone to the beach, they would have gotten a tan. (Se fossero andati in spiaggia, si sarebbero abbronzati.)

Example: If we had known about the concert, we would have gone. (Se avessimo saputo del concerto, ci saremmo andati.)

Example: If Rachel had listened to Monica, she wouldn't have lost her wallet. (Se Rachel avesse ascoltato Monica, non avrebbe perso il portafoglio.)
