Il Discorso Indiretto in Inglese (Reported Speech)

Il discorso indiretto, o reported speech, si usa per riferire ciò che qualcuno ha detto senza usare le sue parole esatte. Si tratta di una sorta di "riassunto" delle parole di qualcun altro.Cambia la struttura della frase e spesso anche i tempi verbali.

Tempi Verbali nel Discorso Indiretto

Se il verbo introduttivo è al passato (es. said, told, asked), i tempi verbali del discorso diretto di solito si trasformano in un tempo verbale più "indietro" nel tempo, seguendo la backshift:

Presente Semplice ? Passato Semplice: "I go to the gym." ? She said she went to the gym.
Presente Continuo ? Passato Continuo: "I'm watching TV." ? He said he was watching TV.
Passato Semplice ? Trapassato Prossimo: "I bought a new car." ? She said she had bought a new car.
Passato Continuo ? Trapassato Continuo: "I was studying all night." ? He said he had been studying all night.
Presente Perfetto ? Trapassato Prossimo: "I have finished my homework." ? She said she had finished her homework.
Will ? Would: "I will call you later." ? He said he would call me later.
Can ? Could: "I can swim." ? She said she could swim.

Eccezione: Se si riporta un fatto universalmente vero o ancora attuale, il tempo verbale può rimanere invariato.

Verbi Introduttivi

Si usano verbi come say, tell, ask, explain, ecc. per introdurre il discorso indiretto.Say si usa quando non si specifica la persona a cui si parla: He said he was tired.Tell si usa quando si specifica la persona a cui si parla: He told me he was tired.Ask si usa per le domande: She asked me where I was going.
